On a trip to the library today I picked up two books that I think are very important right now. The one I started first is March, by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell. It is the first volume of a three part autobiography in graphic novel form. I’m already caught in the first volume and look forward to reading all three.
The second book I checked out and will read next is 1984, by George Orwell. When I first read it in high school it seemed so impossible (thank goodness!) and the year so far away. Not in today’s America, though. How sad to say that it seems chillingly timely right now!

A Fondness For Reading 
I plan to read all three of John Lewis’ graphic novels. I read 1984 several years ago and am afraid if I read it now, I’ll have even more terrible nightmares than I’m having right now. Never in all my life have I had dreams about the political situation of this country. 😦

I read the first book in the March trilogy a couple years ago. I plan to reread it and move on to the sequels this year!

Les, I know what you mean about having nightmares right now! Current politics has never before interfered with my sleep, either, until now. I don’t know if I’ll be able to read 1984 entirely, but I’m going to give it a try. It’s part of my own personal “resistance reading.”
Kelly, I’m so impressed with March #1. It would be an incredibly powerful teaching tool if I was still in the classroom!

March sounds good. I am currently reading Writing on the Wall by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and think it should be required reading and thinking for all of us in the current political climate.

I feel the same as Les. I was planning on reading The Handmaid’s Tale this winter finally but I just don’t think I can do it right now. My stress level is through the roof. March has the ability to inspire so that’s a great choice! I need to get it as well.
