Hooray! It’s time for another Classics Club Spin! This Spin will be a little different from previous spins. To add more fun to the challenge, this list should include some of the “chunksters” we have on our lists. We will have until January 31, 2019 to finish our spin book! The spin number will be announced on November 27, and at that time I will return to this post and highlight in red the book I will be reading for this fun November-through-January spin. Here is my list of 20 books selected from my master list of 50 books to read in 5 years.
Happy reading to all the spinners!
-
Americanah, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche (did not finish)
- Death Comes for the Archbishop, Willa Cather
- The Sea Runners, Ivan Doig
- Travels With my Aunt, Graham Greene
- Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
- Excellent Women, Barbara Pym
- Middlemarch, George Eliot
- The Story of an African Farm, Olive Schreiner
- Neuromancer, William Gibson
- Kristin Lavransdatter, Sigrid Undset
- A Room With a View, E.M. Forster
- Silent Spring, Rachel Carson
- Dust Tracks on a Road, Zora Neale Hurston
- One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez
- The Solitary Summer, Elizabeth von Arnim
- Death Be Not Proud, John Gunther
- A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith
- A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry
- The Outermost House, Henry Beston
- This Star Shall Abide, Sylvia Engdahl
I’ve only read three of these. Jane Eyre, Death Comes for the Archbishop, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. All three are very good!

Les, both Jane Eyre and Death Comes for the Archbishop will be re-reads for me. It’s been many years since I read either one so I’m really looking forward to rereading them. I’ve never read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but it’s been on my list for a long time. and now I am really hoping that’s the number chosen for this Spin!

Ah, we have the same no. 2! Heard so much about the author but not read anything. I also have Kristin Lavransdottir. It came up a short while ago, but did not manage to get through it. Jane Eyre is very good. Love the Brontës. I really like Green’s book as well, but then, I am a fan of his. One hundred years of solitude is rather tough, at the same time it is a magical family saga. Good luck with your draw.

Thanks, J.E. Fountain! Death Comes for the Archbishop is my favorite Willa Cather, but it’s been many years since I read it. I love the books I’ve read by Gabo but have never read 100 years. ‘Tis time!

I read the Silent Spring for a previous spin – very interesting and frustrating at the same time – we’ve known this stuff for over 50 yrs and still no change!

Brona, I watched a wonderful documentary on Rachel Carson recently and it sparked this interest in reading her books. Your “still no change” comment is very true. We’re realizing so many things that should have been changed in the last 50 years simply haven’t changed! It’s sobering.

I recently read “Excellent Women” and “Kristin Lavransdatter”, and liked them both. For the latter I strongly suggest the 1997 translation by Tiina Nunnally. A better, modern translation. My review of it with more about that is here: https://booktapestry.blogspot.com/2018/02/back-to-classics-2018-20th-century.html . I hope you enjoy your spin choice!
