Wise Words: How to Open a New Book

I remember when I was taught to do this, long ago!  And I as a teacher, I taught this skill to my students each year. I still do this with new books. Do you do this?

Nan, I assumed it was something taught to us all in school. I’ve been trying to remember how old I was when I was taught to do it. I remembered we each had a book and were directed through each step of the process. I also remember the smell of those brand new books! Loved it! Yes, it really works for hardback books and extends the life of the book.

Kristen, I learned it in school. We had to do it to our new textbooks. Of course, that was many years ago so I’m guessing it’s something that got lost along the way. However, it really works and extends the life of hardback books. I’m not sure I’d use it much on thick paperbacks. They bind them so differently now and the glue probably wouldn’t hold well. Life changes!
