A number of years ago, Byron read a book I recommended to him. It was Remembering, by Wendell Berry. I have always liked Wendell Berry’s books, and there were things in this book that reminded me of my Dad. So Byron read it, but he didn’t like it as much as I did. However, this many years later, I found this quote copied down in his notebook:

…from Byron’s notebook
What a lovely sentiment and definitely one worth remembering. As you know, that love lives on. Blessings, my friend.

Oh, how I love this! What a gem, and what a gift to discover it in his notebook.
I have never read anything by Wendell Berry, but I am curious about his books. Which would you recommend I begin with?

Les, that’s a good question. I like to read books in a series in order, and his Port Williams books are sort of a series all about the people that live in a small community. But I’ve just read them out of order. Nathan Coulter reminded me of people in my own family, reminded me of my grandparents, and I thought it was very moving. I love his poetry. But my favorite of his is a children’s book called “Whitefoot.”

That’s a wonderful quote! I’ve not read any Wendell Berry but reading this makes me think I need to correct that!
