Preparing to Read Tom Lake

So many of my friends and family have told me that I need to read Ann Patchett’s latest novel, Tom Lake. I agree! I’m so excited to start reading it, but I’m taking a little time to prepare for the experience. I already bought the book, and the audiobook version which is narrated by Meryl Streep, because I want to enjoy  both the written word and what I am certain will be a phenomenal audio experience. And since I heard that two stories are integral to Tom Lake, I bought a copy of Our Town, by Thornton Wilder, (since I couldn’t find my old high school copy of the play), and I downloaded a copy of The Cherry Orchard, by Anton Chekhov. I am reading those two classics first.

The anticipation is sweet! I am loving my pre-reading for this novel, and I can’t wait to start it. It is already turning out to be a great reading experience.

Reading Our Town prior to Town Lake definitely added my appreciation and enjoyment of Patchett’s novel. I read The Cherry Orchard, too, and don’t feel like that added quite as much. You’re in for a treat with Tom Lake!

I wish I had read Our Town before I read Tom Lake. However, I checked the book out from the library and have reserved the audio version so I will read it before I listen to it. I loved it on its own and even more as it brought back memories of summers I worked at camps. The summer theater and my camps shared the sense of living in a world that was an entity unto itself. You get to know the people who share that world in a way that is different from any other coming together that I have ever known. I look forward to your review.

I’m really looking forward to this novel and I think that’s so cool that you are preparing with some pre-reading first! I’ve enjoyed several of her other books so I’m hoping this will be a five star read!

I’m also looking forward to the audio version of Tom Lake when my turn at the library comes up. I’ve never read or seen Our Town but saw The Cherry Orchard a few years ago. I think I will follow your example and read both of these before launching into Tom Lake.
